Apollo 8 not only details the actual three days of the mission, but also the ups-and-downs and ins-and-outs of the entire US space program leading up to the eventual lunar loop made by the Apollo 8 mission. I finished the book with a renewed awe of the unbridled ingenuity, sheer willpower, and lockstep teamwork required to accomplish one of /5.   The book is filled with startling colour images of fiery Apollo launches and spacecraft interiors as well as scenes of the bright blue disc of the Earth rising majestically over grey lunar plains.

Just days after the movie "Apollo 18"opened in theaters across America on Sept. 2, , NASA announced that the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO, had captured the sharpest images ever taken from space of the Apo 14 and 17 landing sites.   Take Apo which tells the story of an ill-fated mission to the Wikipedia page of Katherine Johnson, the heroine played in .

The flight of Apollo 9 was the first mission to test the entire Apollo spacecraft which included the Lunar Module (LM) and the Command and Service Module (CSM), During the ten day mission, the astronauts tested all three Apollo components and all the operations needed for a trip to the moon, such as docking and undocking the lunar lander with the command module, testing the LM's propulsion 4/5(9).

The book does not pretend to be an exhaustive history of the Apollo program. The events covered span from pre-NASA days, when rocket science was not even directly connected to ideas for space travel, through the planning stages of Apollo, all the way to the wistful, early end of the Apollo program/5().

Concurrent prime objectives included an overall checkout of launch vehicle and spacecraft systems, the crew, and procedures.

Apollo 11 is the most celebrated mission, and rightly so, but if Apollo 8 had not succeeded, Apollo 11 would not have happened the way it did. This book gives Apollo 8 its due.

The prose is engaging, not dry; it is not overly technical. Key technical concepts that are essential to the story are explained by: 1.

The book is the basis of the film adaptation Apo directed by Ron Howard. Author: Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger. A calculated gamble, the first Saturn V test launch took place on 9 November with the entire Apollo-Saturn combination.

A second test followed on 4 Apriland even though it was only partially successful because the second stage shut off prematurely and the third stage--needed to start the Apollo payload into lunar trajectory--failed. Here is the tale of a mission that was both a calculated risk and a wild crapshoot, a stirring account of how three American heroes forever changed our view of the home planet.5/5(1).
